Move Vista Premium on HD PC to PC?
I have a Dell 531S and the MOBO died. Ive bought another well functioning Dell 531S and wondering what problems I would have installing the hard drive from my original one to the "newer" one.....and if it's at all possible??? Both have Dell activation codes but I read about Vista ALSO having an internal code or BIOS match before it will start as well. Has anyone successfully moved a hard drive with Vista preinstalled from PC to PC or am I going to have to wipe it and buy a Vista Premium OS? I'd rather ask here before trying JIC trying to do so messes up the NEWER one too. AND....if NOT possible, Im assuming I can put the original in as a slave HD and move saved files like the other Microsoft OS I previously used? WWW has me scared half senseless trying things with Vista I used to do. thanks for any help. Steve |

Well I don't think you will have problem with your new mobo. If you attach your old pre-reinstalled hdd on your new mobo the only thing is that your old hdd wont recognize the new mobo or if it recognize it you will have to install the chipset drivers for smooth functioning. Hence I suggest you take a nice backup first of your all the needed & important documents. Now you have the backup you can hook the hdd as primary to the new board. I hope this helps. |

There must not be any problem with it. There is no BIOS lock on the Windows Vista OS. If the Old and new computers are same in terms of hardware nothing will block your OS from working. Well i would recommend you to use your old Hard disk as a Master Drive and the new one can be used as the Slave drive. As Vista is already installed in the drive, moving it may cause problems. All the best! |

Im UP AND RUNNING on the newer 531S and on older HD as well as my add on video card. Only problem I'm having is my memory. When booting, I HAVE TO go to Boot sequence and set it to go to hard drive? and it says the HD is 3rd master. A quick reminder how to get to boot sequence......sorry, Im old thanks steve |
