Following are the steps for Windows XP. Most of the time the service steps remains the same but some steps may differ slightly if you use a different Windows operating system.

    1. If you have set the users to your system then you need to have Admin account rights to make changes to the control panel.
    2. Go to Start >Select Control Panel.
    3. Double-click on Administrative Tools.
    4. to go to the services you need to Double-click the Services icon.
    5. Double-click the service that you want to stop or start.
    6. When the Service Properties window appears, do one of the following:

      • If the service is running, click Stop the service.
      • If the service is not running, click Start the service.
    7. Click OK.

    • To open Services, click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Services.
    • You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.
    • To configure startup parameters for a service, right-click the service, click Properties, and then type the parameters in Start parameters before you click Start. These settings are used only once and are not saved. (A backslash (\) is treated as an escape character; type two backslashes for each backslash in a parameter.)

Re: How to Win XP services Start, Stop, Manual, Pause and Resume

In Win XP there are some services which need to start only on the occasion like any software we have installed and that requires only to run for certain requirement then you may use of Manual and Resume services as to start these services you will get the option only while right clicking on the service which you need to start from the services icon. Select the service which you need to start, Click the Startup Type menu, and then select Manual. Click Apply. In the Services Status section, click Start to start the service. Manual option is for that whenever we want that services to be need to be started at that time it should be enabled.
