3389 is default Remote desktop Port in windows xp. This is the port you would forward in your routers port forwarding section. Through this port you can simply go into your router and forward that port through and after enabling your remote desktop feature.
You can use the Remote Desktop feature in Windows XP Professional by changing default remote desktop port from 3389 to something else. Use the following registry to change port HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TerminalServer\WinStations\RDP-Tcp\PortNumber, Double click this key, chose decimal and enter the new value. Restart terminal service port.
Follow this step to enable Port 3389 on windows xp as Remote desktop port
- Right-click My Computer, and click Properties.
- On the Remote tab, click the Allow users to connect remotely to this computer check box.
- Click Select Remote Users, and then click Add.
- In the Select Users dialog box, type the name of the user and then click OK. Click OK again to return to the System Properties dialog box, and then click OK to close it.
