    Updating product key Windows XP

    Hi,

I have a Windows XP profi version on my PC, which I cannot update because Microsoft states it is an illegal version. So, I cannot install the latest IE explorer.

Meanwhile I have bought a new XP version with a valid product key. Can I update my installed version with this key, without installing the whole XP system again?

    Thanks,

    Bert

It is better recommended that you should perform a clean installation. Because the pirated version has lot of system flaws. Microsoft Update had identified your system as a victim of counterfeit software. It will either suggest you to get a license copy. Now you have it. It is very easy run a windows setup. Just insert the windows disc and setup window will open. Select install windows. In the second box choose complete installation not upgrade. Windows will do the rest of the work. I also read about 'The Windows Product Key Update Tool' on the microsoft site. I don't want a complete install because I have to re-install all my software then. Anyone experience with this 'Windows Product Key Update Tool'

yes of course you can do.....
    try out this
    launch regedit and locate

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents

In the right pane, right-click OOBETimer, and then click Modify.change it's value to deactivate the windows.if windows not activated keep on change the current key
    now launch command prompt
    %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a

I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows and then click Next.
Change Product key,now enter your new key,and then click Update. If you are returned to the previous window, click Remind me later, and then restart the computer.
