I am working on Windows XP computer using remote desktop connection. Whenever I leave the desk for a long time, my remote computer remains ON till the time I come which consumes a lot of power. So I want to either hibernate ir or put my remote computer into standby mode. How can I hibernate my remote desktop computer running Windows XP via RDP?

Re: How to hibernate Windows XP computer via RDP

Often people finds only “disconnect” and “Log off” links in the Start menu when working on remote desktop computer. The simplest trick would be:

1. Go to Desktop
2. Press “ALT-F4″
3. Select “hibernate” or “restart” or “shutdown” from the pop-up (which you want)

There are many tricks to hibernate Windows XP computer via RDP and one of this include creating a desktop shortcut as follows:
  1. Right click on your Windows desktop and select New -> Shortcut
  2. Under "Type the location of the item", type "rundll32.exe PowrProf.dll, SetSuspendState" and click "Next" button
  3. Give it a unique name and click Finish.

Re: How to hibernate Windows XP computer via RDP

There are two ways to hibernate Windows XP computer via RDP: automatically or manually.

To automatically put your computer into hibernation
  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Power Options.
  2. Click the Hibernate tab
  3. Click the APM tab, click Enable Advanced Power Management support, and then click Apply.
  4. Click the Power Schemes tab, and then select a time period in System hibernates. Your computer hibernates after it has been idle for the specified amount of time.

To manually put your computer into hibernation
  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Power Options.
  2. Click the Hibernate tab, and then select the Enable hibernate support check box.
  3. Click OK to close the Power Options dialog box.
  4. Click Start, and then click Shut Down. In the What do you want the computer to do drop-down list, click Hibernate.

...Except the MANUAL method doesn't work since its over RDP, which was the problem to be solved, not how to activate hibernate.

Desktop + F4 is my favorite,
otherwise you can also use the taskmanager (right click taskbar) (although I think hybernate/stand by might not be available in SP3).
