Cabinet files are compressed packages that contain a number of related files. The format of a cabinet file is optimized for maximum compression. Cabinet files on the Windows XP compact disc (CD) contains the actual Windows files.

You can extract individual files from the cabinet files to replace missing or corrupted files.

To extract information from a .cab file in Windows XP:

    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
    3. Click Expand File.
    4. In the File to restore box, type the name of the file that you want to restore.
    5. In the Restore from box, type the path to the Windows XP .cab file from which you want to restore the file, or click Browse From to locate the Windows XP .cab file.

NOTE: The Windows XP .cab files are stored in the I386 folder on the Windows XP compact disc (CD).
    6. In the Save file in box, type the path to which you want the new file extracted, or click Browse To to locate the folder that you want.
    7. Click Expand.
    8. In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click OK. If you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.

A CAB file (cabinet file) is a compressed file containing a set of files, usually for purposes of installation.

To decompress a CAB file, just use one of the following software:
    • 7zip
    • IceOWS
    • PoweCABchiver
    • IZArc
    • TUGZip

You can open a CAB file directly from Windows by clicking Start / Run, and then by running the following command:

    regsvr32 cabview.dll

Cabinet files are compressed files used mainly for installation of Windows.
However, it is not possible, unless you are using third party software such as WinRAR, to open directly in Windows Explorer. It may be interesting to extract a file that you need, a DLL for example. To open the CAB files in Windows, click the Start button and then click Run. Now enter the following command and then press OK: regsvr32 cabview.dll Now you simply double click a CAB file to view and extract its contents.

Cabview provides a graphical view of the contents of a .cab file similar to Windows Explorer. This allows easy file manipulation through drag-and-drop of files to and from the .cab file.

To use Cabview, perform the following steps:

    • Navigate through Windows Explorer to the .cab file you wish to view.
    • Right-click the file, and select the View option. CABVIEW presents the files contained with the .cab file. You can drag files into the CABVIEW window to add files, and drag files from the CABVIEW window to extract them onto the system.
