    Hi,

    To understand DNS propagation you must first know a little bit about the DNS.
    DNS = Domain Name Server
    You set up your website with your hosting provider. These hosting providers create a Master DNS record in their DNS. The domain registrar is a company you pay fr domain name, connects to the web hosts DNS server.
    To see your website everyone has to first go to registration database to find out who has the DNS authority for your website. Now they visit hosting providers DNS server to find the IP address of you domain name.& then they can view your website.
    Here this process needs to be done fast & for this the ISP(Internet service providers) catches their DNS records. This means they copy the master records & make their own copy locally to look for the information. This in turn speeds up the process of locating your website.
    Now the catching process is defined at various interval of time by each company or the ISP that catches the DNS record which varies from few hours to few days. This is DNS propagation.

    Re: What is DNS propagation?

    Any time that DNS changes are made (on any level), you need to wait for propagation to complete. Propagation usually takes 3-5 days, but can take as long as 7-10 days. During propagation, traffic may come to either location. One person may see the new server while someone else sees the old one. Also, yourdomain.name may work while www.yourdomain.name does not. All of this is normal during propagation.

    Please note that this means that just because you go to the new site when you type in the domain name does not mean that propagation is complete. The best way to determine whether or not propagation is complete is to review the statistics for each site (the old one & the new one).
