All the NICs from the time of 10MBps has the standard MTU of 1500. Even the 100Mbps and 1000Mbps Lan has this for backward compatibility. You can increase the MTU upto 9000 but the CRC for the transmission is 32-bit in IPv4. To override this limit IPv6 must be used. If you think you have very high data to transfer you can enable jumbo frame but its not required as not all the ISP provide with IPv6. Not atleast in India. So you can stick to MTU 1500. Even if you enable Jumbo frame it won't have the effect over the internet that much. So i would suggest you to stick to 1500 MTU.
I am not going to try it over internet yet. I want to transfer high data over a Local Area Network. So i just wan't to try it out for myself if it makes any difference or not.. Thanks for the information though! Its useful.. Also if anyone can tell me how do i enable jumbo frame in Windows Vista. Thanks!
You can enable Jumbo frame from Advanced Setting of the NIC.
- Go to Network Connections
- Right-Click on the LAN connection > Properties
- Click on Configure > Advance Tab
- Select jumbo frame from the list
- On the right right select Max Value [it will be 4K]
- Click ok and reset your LAN connection [Disable and Enable]
Done!
