How to Rename File Extensions in Vista

When I double click a file to rename it, the file name is selected, but not the extension. It drives me crazy. I tried going to "folder settings" at the configuration screen, but the setting to view the extensions of files isn't there with Vista. Anybody has any idea.

Best way to work with this new behavior is to press <Shift>+<End> when the filename is selected, this will include the extension in the text selection. Open "My Computer" and click the "Tools" drop down menu and click "Folder Options". Next click the "View" tab and make sure to hide file extension for know files is not selected and press ok.

Open a folder or open explorer select the file you wanted to change the extension, Click Folder Options, Click the View tab, Uncheck Hide extensions for the file or else you go to "rename", the file extension is usually not overwritten, just the name of the file. But if the file extension shows in the rename box, you can also change that. I sometimes do that from e.g. .pps to .ppt.
