How to get 256 color without any disks

Yesterday i loaded Windows 3.1 on my machine but couldn't get 256 colors. I tried everything which my friends told me but didn't work all tips they give me .
after that as my friend told me that there is problem of the hardware was newer than the software so I got a Chips SVGA Video Card. but still problem not solve can you guys provide me some solution ?

The 256-color mode is generally the default graphics mode

The driver of your graphics card has been lost entered into conflict with another program, I think you must re-install.

Download and install their Win31 drivers. Period. Syschk (DOS) might tell you a bit more about your system. Packet drivers are usually used for networking under DOS, or CD writing under DOS. Restart it in Safe Mode as you do a "scanreg / restore" command line mode.

Go to My computer icon on your desktop. Right Click on desktop icon and select Device manager. In this you will see drivers. If you saw yellow triangle with a black exclamation mark in it that means drivers are missing or need updating.
