ALG.exe is Application Layer Gateway Service. This file plays an important role in connecting third party internet software from our computer to the internet. Applications like : torrent client, IM clients and other internet based softwares that need internet connection, uses this process as a gateway to bypass the windows firewall.

Right, this is an essential file for internet connection, if you suspect this file is acting weird or any malicious activity is being carried out by this file, you need to run an antivirus scan. This is a windows file and like any other file, this file can be infected by an external virus or any malicious code. By default this is not a virus.
