At my office, I have upgraded Windows XP to Vista operating system. Usually, I have a practice of keeping my computer in the hibernate mode. But I've noticed that there is no option for hibernation in Vista.....help

Enabling hibernate option in Windows XP is a much simple setting via Power Options. However, in Windows Vista, it's a bit tricky -

Follow these steps to enable Hibernate option in start menu of Windows Vista:

    1. Press “Window Key + r” or go to Start > Run to launch Run Prompt. Type “cmd” and press Enter - to open Command Prompt.

    2. On the command Prompt windows, type the following two command in order:
      • powercfg /hibernate on
      • powercfg -h on

Now you use Hibernate Option in Windows Start Menu...

Re: Hibernate option missing in Vista

Have you tried running Disk Clenup in your Windows Vista.....!!! Because this is the known issue in Vista. The hibernate option disappears whenever you run "Disk Cleanup" because Disk Cleanup wizard also removes Hibernate files. So if you use Hibernate then make sure you deselect "Hibernattion File Cleaner" option from the list in future.

    1. Open Command Prompt in Administrator mode by typing "cmd" in Startmenu Search box and press "Ctrl+Shift+Enter".

    2. Now provide any of following commands:
    - powercfg /hibernate on
    - powercfg -h on

    3. Exit command prompt and Hibernate option should appear in Startmenu.

Here's an alternative method to enable the missing hibernate option in Windows Vista.
    Foolow the steps -
    1. Go to the command prompt icon in the Start menu under Accessories and right click the icon: click "Run as administrator".
    2. Paste: "powercfg.exe /hibernate on" and hit Enter and also paste "powercfg -h on" and hit enter just to be safe.
    3. Open Control Panel and type in "Hibernate" in the Search.
    4. Click "Turn hibernation on or off"
    5. Click "Change advance power settings"
    6. Scroll to and expand the "Sleep" option.
    7. Select "Off" to the "Allow hybrid sleep" option.
    8. Scroll to and expand the "Power buttons and lid" option.
    9. Select "Hibernate" for the "Sleep button action" option.
    10. Select "Hibernate" for the "Start menu power button" option.
