    Windows can't find explorer .... nor regedit!!

    My notebook running XP won't boot correctly anymore.

    After logging in, I get a blank screen, i.e. explorer doesn't start. I tried to follow the instructions in this thread (Fix error Windows can't find explorer.exe), but the problem is, regedit won't start either. There's no error message, just nothing happens. I also can't open a command window (again, nothing happens). The only thing I can bring up is msconfig.

    I've tried running windows in safe mode, but the results were the same.

    Any idea how I can bring up regedit to fix this??

    Thanks!!

    Try this: Locate Regedit.exe in C:/Windows. Rename it as Regedit.com. Go to Start>Run. Type Regedit.com and see if it works. If it does not, go back and rename it again as Regedit.exe.

    Didn't work, unfortunately.

    Since I can't open a command window I did this through the 'browse...' option in task mgr -> file -> run, right-click on regedit.exe, rename, etc...

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks!

    I think you should first consider about why your command prompt is not opening up, because i have gone through some consequences where i found the same problem, whenever i try to open the command prompt it does not open, I completely format my PC,then it command prompt has started and as soon as my CMD started all the application which we run through CMD has also started.
    so i suggest you first go through the follwing thread discussion I find whether it solves your problem.

    Re: Windows can't find explorer .... nor regedit!!

    i looked at your link, but my situation is different. from tsk mgr -> file -> new task I CAN run the following:

    * msconfig
    * internet explorer (iexplorer)

    I CANNOT run the following:

    * explorer.exe (error message)
    * regedit.exe (nothing happens)
    * rededt32.exe (nothing happens)
    * cmd.exe (nothing happens)

    From other posts it seems I need to make modifications to the registry to get my computer to work again. How can I get in there??

    One word -- VIRUS! There are several that do this so trying to guide you through fixing it is virtually impossible. 1st thing to do is get a good, up-to-date anti-virus program (AVG (free), McAfee, Trend Micro, etc.) on a CD and try to run it in Safe-Mode.
