Event Viewer error message
I was checking the Event Viewer in my PC and found this error message: "AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to write to an illegal IO port address (0x70), which lies in the 0x70 - 0x71 protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance." Can anyone please tell me what this error means and find a solution? Regards, Ubxoldier |

| Re: Event Viewer error message
This behavior can occur if your computer's basic input/output system (BIOS) attempts to write to a port in AML [Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) Machine Language]. This attempt causes Microsoft Windows XP to prevent any access to that port. This feature has been designed to improve the stability of your computer's operating system. Contact the BIOS vendor for a possible BIOS update. For more information see: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/archive/BIOSAML.mspx Go to the web site of the manufacturer of your motherboard. Pick the model and download it. |

| Re: Event Viewer error message
It is quite normal for the BIOS to look up (read) the CMOS settings. That's what is accessed through 0x70 and 0x71. You write the address within the CMOS ram to port 0x70, then read port 0x71. So why isn't it complaining about the write? But if the system is coughing copiously, perhaps a virus check might be in order. OR If it is designed to happen, you must have done something to trigger it off. Perhaps installing Windows XP? If it has been happening ever since XP was installed, then you *might* need to upgrade the BIOS. This is a non-trivial thing to do. If you are not *certain* that you know how to do it, don't do it. If you did something, perhaps changing the Power management settings, can you change it back? |

What I found out is that these errors will occur with XP and an older BIOS. Something to do with the way a bios is programmed.. Enter the bios by pressing the relevent key (usually delete). Go to the power management page and make sure that "ACPI aware OS" or maybe "P&P OS" is set to yes. Set power management to disabled. Exit, saving changes and see how you go. I have known this problem to occur on some mainboards. |
