Re: How to check disk usage on Ubuntu

You must check the disk usage with Disk Usage Analyzer in Ubuntu. Its one of the great tool that Ubuntu is bundled with. To run Disk Usage Analyzer:-

1. Go Applications -> Accessories -> Disk Usage Analyzer.

2. Here you have choice of opening the filesystem or a particular folder. If you choose filesystem, you will have to wait for a while because it's going through and checking all the files and folders on your system… but it's worth the wait when you see the nice GUI in action.

3. Right click on anything in the tree, and you will see a list of options

4. You can also delete files from within the tool, which is an added plus.

You can even check your usage of the disk by screenlet as well. It is a little widget that runs on your background and you can see various things.Screenlets can do way more than check your hard drive usage and I encourage you to check it out to better utalize it's resources.
  • To install screenlets, enter the following in the terminal.

    Quote:
    $sudo apt-get install screenlets
  • Now run the screenlets-manager to pick which screenlets you wish to run.

    Quote:
    $screenlets-manager
  • Make sure you select yes.

  • Double click on the diskusage screenlet and it should appear on your background.

Add command df -h for checking partition usage. This command will show you the disk usage in the terminal and is a quick and easy way to determine disk usage from the console.
