First you would need to determine what you have. Did he completely overwrite the old os or is it sill there.

Secondly you'd need to know if or how you are supposed to obtain the OEM media that could either restore your system or rebuild it. You may have to contact the seller/maker of the unit to get a replacement disk(s).

Click Start, click All Programs, click Maintenance, and then click Backup and Restore Center.
Click Set up backup, select the location for your backup files, and then click Next.
Continue with the wizard to select the following:The drives and the file types to back up
How frequently to back up the drives and the file types
What time of day to perform the backup
The drives and the file types to back up
How frequently to back up the drives and the file types
What time of day to perform the backup
Finish the wizard, and then click Save Settings and Start Backup.
When the back up is complete, perform a clean install of Windows XP.

Did you uninstall it in Safemode (F8) ?

First try this, refresh your iconcache, download TweakUI (from Microsoft, right side), install it and at the bottom you have the option "REPAIR", chose repair icons (reboot) ...

After the reboot do a windows-update.

Re: Problem with Windows Vista Operating system

Vista uses a different file system then XP does, so that is why you are getting errors when trying to format the drive; it's format cannot be recognized by XP. You have to delete the partition first, something like a good old win 998 boot disk will work (it will see it as a non dos partition). But, if your computer came with Vista installed and you remove it and install XP, you will invalidate the warranty. If you insist on rolling it back to XP, make sure you download all of the drivers for your system first, everything from system board chipset to sound to NIC drivers for XP, as XP probably does not natively support your hardware. Also, if your hard drive is a SATA drive, that will cause a problem when trying to install XP, as XP does not recognize SATA natively. You will have to have the SATA controller drivers on a floppy disk (you heard right) when you boot from XP, and when the screen comes up asking if you have additional drivers to add, press F6, insert floppy and XP will load your SATA drivers then (XP only supports loading additional drivers from a floppy drive, so if you do not have one you are SOL, unless you purchase one).

go to bios and select boot from cd and try to install it will directly go to booting process. there u can format and istall the os which u want. As it is directly booting from harddisk it is giving that error. i faced the same problem before for more information.
