Ubuntu Linux Question

Hey guys!
I'm new to linux and i want to try it out before i use it... I have Ubuntu 8.10 CD and it works fine... But my question is when i plug in the pen drive which i have it shows me : Free Disk Space : 342.00 KB of 974.5 MB (100% used)
This is weired...! When i plugged my pen drive in windows it shows me the same... What would be the issue? Is it because i plugged it in Ubuntu? Help guys!

Hey...!
I suggest you use some software like Gparted to view the correct amount of disk space available...! Also if you are using windows, go to device manager to make sure you don't have any unallocated space... All the best...!

Well the reason with the pen drive showing less capacity is because some space is taken by the file system... Like NTFS/FAT32/FAT... When a pen drive or any disk is initialized, it makes up an index so that it knows which data is saved and where...! All the best...!

Yeah! I agree with smirnoff... Some space is taken for File allocation table... And also the manufacturer advertises 1,000,000 bytes as 2GB where as 1,000,000 byte make 0.953 GB = 953 MB. Its not about the linux OS but its the general way of calculating space...!
