Depending on how long you have had this problem, you can use XPs system restore feature to return some configurations to a time when you are sure this problem did not exist. This will be found under ProgramsAccessories/System Tools. There is never a guarantee this will work or not cause other problems, however.

Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete, Process Tab, end all explorer.exe and iexplore.exe processes .

Type regedit in File - Rum

    Delete these three keys.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StuckRects2
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StreamsMRU

Back in Task Manager choose Shutdown menu - Reboot.

The Taskbar is probably disappearing because the process is crashing. There is some defect, probably a remnant of your worm/spyware attack.

HOW TO GET THE TASKBAR BACK After the Taskbar Disappears, you should be able to get it back via these steps:

    1. CTRL+ALT+DEL
    2. File -> New Task (Run)
    3. Enter explorer.exe
    4. Click OK

The Windows taskbar that normally sits at the bottom of your screen can be collapsed or moved to any other side of your screen. If you have accidentally collapsed your taskbar, just move your cursor to the bottom of your screen slowly until it changes from an "I" shape to a double-headed arrow. Once you get the double-headed arrow, pull the edge up until you have the taskbar at the width you want. You can use the same technique to make your taskbar wider. To move your taskbar to another location, just drag it to any other edge of the screen. If you want your Taskbar to hide until you move the mouse to the bottom of the screen, go to Taskbar and Start Menu under the Control Panel and put a check mark beside "Auto-hide the taskbar".

If you want to make sure that the Windows XP taskbar is always visible, even when you run a program in a maximized (full–screen) window, select the Keep taskbar on top of other windows option. This procedure tells you how to select this option through Taskbar and Start Menu Properties in Control Panel.

    1. On the Start menu:

      • Select Control Panel

    2. In Control Panel:
      • Be sure you are in Classic View (all Control Panel icons are showing).
      • If not, under Control Panel in the left pane, select Switch to Classic View.
      • Select Taskbar and Start Menu

    3. In the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box, on the Taskbar tab:
      • Select (or clear) the Keep the taskbar on top of other windows check box.
      • Select OK.

    4. To close Control Panel:
      • Select the Close button.
