I messed the hell with the SP1-time trying to resolve this error.
Have you integrated patches for example vLite?
EDIT: Try to install again, the problem for me turned up only for the first time!
I am still getting the same error. I tried unplugping everything too. I even closed out everything in task manager prior to running the installer. And no, I didn't end process on any system process when I was shutting stuff down.
Ok, interesting! Do you have a genuine Windows, which is enabled?
I went through my conversation with Microsoft's development team on this bug for SP1 and they say that there is a problem that will only occur on the RTM versions of Vista, not if you have SP1. Did you install Vista RTM, then upgraded to SP1 or have you installed with a disc with SP1 integrated?
Have you installed any Hotfix beyond them coming via Windows Update?
Yup, it is a activated version.
The installation was done with sp1 integrated!
No Hotfix posted.
I have taken what is offered via Windows Update
Did the update install KB955430: Vista SP2 Servicing Stack......
If so and SP2 failed to install, restart and bring up windows update: check for updates. You should see: KB947821: System Update Readiness Tool Vista. Install it. It will take some time and pause at 60%, do not close, it is still working to fix and update, it may take as long as 45 minutes. If you do not see this update go here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
After it completes reboot check for updates and SP2 will be there, install, enjoy....
