Follow this, mate and it too will work. if you already used the reshack program, then it will have made a file with the changes. Just follow the instructions on how to grant permissions, locate the imageres.dll and it's just a simple thing as renaming 2 files.

Hope it works for you too.

What is the easiest way to change the .wav file I have that I want to use into a .wave file?

I can hardly understand your querie, as you have mentioned that you want to convert a .wav file in same extension? If you want, then there are many converters that can convert wav file in different sound file format such as wav to mp3, wav to midi, etc kind of formats. Or you can even use wav file bitrate converter to higher or lower the tone.

James_911 states that the sound file should not just be a wav file but a wave file. I am confused as to the difference, yet am unable to save the imageres.dll and the only thing i can pinpoint it to is the fact that i am using a wav file not a wave. If this makes sense?

The reason you can't save that file is because Windows 7 ALWAYS locks out the file to any changes because of security reasons. You have to take ownership of that file. There's a registry hack out on the net that can do that. It's called "Take Ownership" and it worked for me.

Re: Change Windows 7 startup sound

    Hi there,
I am also having trouble, Win7 home premium, HP G62 laptop.
Downloaded XN Resource Editor and Take Ownership
Selected my desired.wav and called it 5080.wave (mine is 43kb)
Found imageres.dll saved a few coppies.

The problem I'm having is that XN Resource Editor will not save the file. After editing (removing the old, replacing with new wave file) then
when trying to save imageres.dll, I get - window -

    XN Resource Editor
    System Error. Code: 50
    The request is not supported.
    [ OK ]

You can then only close the XN Resource Editor by selecting,
Cancel in the save changes window.

    Thank's Ted.

    Problem sorted,
I put everything on a USB/Stick drive and edited the .dll on an old
PIII 688MHz, XP machine, stuck it back into the laptop, an VoilĂ*.

NX Resource Editor took ages to open the .dll on the old machine
and didn't shut down correctly, but it saved the new .wave ok.

    Ted
