.msi file and .msu file wont open

Hello, I recently downloaded a file with an extension in .msi. Problem; Vista does not manage to open it. Seeking a little on google I decide to install Windows Installer by downloading it starting from the Microsoft site. Unfortunately the extension .msu of this “patch” is not recognized either by Vista. If somebody would have the solution it would be great^^. Thank you in advance

i think your vista has losts its association for .msu files ( Hotfix files)

here are some simple steps to restore it

Firstly you need to click ‘Select a program from a list of installed programs’ and press OK. The following prompt will then appear.

From here, just select ‘Browse’ and then press OK. Also make sure the ‘Always use the selected program to open this kind of file’ is ticked.

Now browse into your ‘Windows\System32\’ directory and look for the file ‘wusa.exe’, select it and click OPEN.

Now the Windows Update Standalone Installer will be an option within your Open With dialog. Make sure it is selected and press okay.

Thats it, now your .msu packages should be working again as normal.

Could you explain what you mean by msu/wusa as I've never heard those abbreviations before.

Do you have an example of one of the hotfixes that you are referring to? I have looked through all of the MSU format Vista downloads and I could not find any of them that were not included in the Updates section of my SCE server.

Perhaps you need to change your Microsoft Update Settings on your SCE server to include additional update types (Updates, Update Rollups, etc) as well as the default Critical Updates and Security Updates?
