You can do system restore prior to the point of that update,
start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

You could also try check disk: start > run > cmd
in the new window type chkdsk /f
when prompted to run on boot choose Y & reboot
this will check for & fix any disk errors.

Also try start > run sfc /scannow (note the space between sfc & /scannow). You will need to insert your XP CD.

If the problem persists a Repair Install is about all you can do. You will just have to reinstall Windows Updates.

Can you boot to safe mode correctly (holding f8 during just after POST test)? As its likely that something thats installed has caused this error.
If you can boot to safe mode click on start->run->enter msconfig. Once on msconfig go to services. Make sure that hide microsoft services is ticked and click on disable all. Then click on the startup tab and disable all of the boxes. Once you have done that restart and boot normally.
