Hi, I like to change my hard drive from FAT32 to NTFS, Without the lost of my programs, my operating system is Windows XP PRO, how can I do that?
Its good to change from FAT 32 to NTFS file system for more stability, security and less fragmentation. Some computer's are sold with windows XP pre installed and with FAT32 FORMAT,and there is a way to change it without data loss.
Just go to MS-DOS and type convert c: /fs:ntfs
dont forget to change the drive c:\, d:\ , e:\ for the one that you wanna convert . Your drive will be converted to NTFS.
But now unless you format your PC, this process is impossible to return to FAT32, once you convert NTFS you can't turn back.
to get changed, just go to the Command Prompt and execute the command:
C:\> CONVERT C: /fs:ntfs
Remember C: D: E: is the drive you want to convert.
After machine re-boot conversion process will start and you'll have your FAT32 converted to NTFS without of data loss.
Enjoy
So you want to start with a 'clean' drive but can't afford losing your precious files? Very simple. All you need to do is back up your files to an external hard-drive or a partition other than the one you want to convert, or burn the data onto CDs. After you're done you can format a drive with NTFS.The process is like this :-
Open Command Prompt
Start | All Programs | Accessories | Command Prompt
OR
Start | Run | type "cmd" without quotes | OK
Type "convert drive letter: /fs:ntfs" and press Enter.
For example, type "convert C: /fs:ntfs" (without quotes) if you want to convert drive C.
If you're asked whether you want to dismount the drive, agree.
Thats It.
Its Simple to Covert. just open command prompt and follow these steps.
For convert C hard drive fat32 to ntfs, type this command
C:\> CONVERT C: /fs:ntfs
If you want convert D drive
D:\> CONVERT D: /fs:ntfs
Where C & D hard drive name.Remember you cant reverse it once you got converted
