hi,
i have problem when i try to replace the missing or modified files using SFC / SCANNOW It says Windows file protection could not initiate a scan of protected system files. What has happened and what is the solution?Can anyone help!!!

The cause of this problem occurs when the following *. inf file contain a description of the source media is not correct: * Fp40ext.inf,* Ims.inf

The first step is to make visible the hidden files and then back up two files:
1) In Windows Explorer, choose Folder Options from the Tools menu
2) Click the View tab
3) Hidden files and folders, click Show all files and folders.
4) Open the folder C: \ Windows.Inf.
5) Click on the file Fp40ext.inf, click on Edit and then click Copy.
6) From the Edit menu, click Paste. This creates a copy of the file Fp40ext.inf called Copy of Fp40ext.inf
7) Repeat steps 5 and 6 for the file Ims.inf.

to slove the problem folloe the step:
Start / Run / regedit
when we are in the Register
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ MICROSOFT \ WINDOWS \ CURRENTVERSION \ SETUP
select it and right key if not already there: "Edit \ New \ String Value and give name as SourcePath
Double-click and return the letter of our CD-ROM for example
D: \
do the same thing in this other location
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ MICROSOFT \ WindowsNT \ CurrentVersion
select it and right key if not already there "Edit \ New \ String Value and give name as SourcePath
Double click and type the letter of our CD-ROM as we did before. Restart to consolidate the change.

The second step is to modify Fp40ext.inf and Ims.inf:

1) Open the file in Notepad Fp40ext.inf. Fp40ext.inf The file is located in the C: \ Windows.inf.
2) Locate each line that contains the word "Professional"
3) Delete "any application for Professional" and replace it with "Home"
4) Save and close the file Fp40ext.inf.
