    Uninstalling Windows Mail from Vista

Is it possible to remove WM? If not, how do I remove the WM account, delete all the messages, and install Outlook 2003? I have all of my messages from my old computer that used XP and Outlook Express. Once I install Outlook, I plan to import my messages from OE. Is that a doable plan?

    You can't uninstall Windows Mail.
Try renaming WinMail.exe to something else. You'll find it in C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\

Sorry, You cannot uninstall Windows Mail. It is a part of Vista. When you installed WLM, it took over as the default email client and replaced all the WM shortcuts with it's. Other than taking up space, it will not hurt anything to let WM sit there not doing anything.

The process "winmail.exe" should not be running (listed in Task Manager) unless you have Windows Mail running, or Windows Mail has some unfinished action it is trying to complete.

You might take a look at the startup programs list to see if winmail.exe is listed. If so, remove or disable it.

Windows Mail is a built-in feature of Windows Vista and it cannot be removed; however, access to the program can be turned on or off.

To turn the Windows Mail feature off or on:
    1. Click the Start button in the left-hand corner of your taskbar

    2. Click Control Panel

    3. Click Programs

    4. Under Programs and Features click Turn Windows features on or off

    5. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation

    6. To turn a Windows feature on, select the check box next to the feature. To turn a Windows feature off, clear the check box

    7. Click OK.
