HP Laptop: Vista Recovery Partition Necessary on HDD?

I bought a HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop for someone. The HDD is partitioned so the D partition is for Vista's system recovery. The guy who sold me the laptop also gave me a system recovery DVD. That DVD isn't an orignal one from HP opr Microsoft, though. I guess he made it somehow.

Anyway, I'm wondering if I need to keep what's already on my HDD on partition D (system recovery partition) or if I can get rid of that since I have a DVD for the recovery.

The reason I'm asking this is that I would like to partition the HDD differently than it is now.

In case I don't need to keep Vista's system recovery partition, then I will just get rid of it and adjust the size of my C and D the way I want them to be.

In case I must keep Vista's system recovery partition, then I want to split my C (about 105Gb) into two smaller partitions plus a third one for the system recovery. However, in such a case could I simply copy what's currently on my HDD's system recovery partition onto an external drive and later put that back on my HDD once I repartitioned the whole HDD?

having a look at your query, i will suggest you to download a software called partition magic as this software will help you to create, merge or delete existing partition.....
it will also help you to recover your data if lost .......

Hello Clive Cussler!
Devasis is right you can use partition softwares like partition magic & resize your C drive & also create new partition without making any changes to D drive.
One more thing I read somewhare in our forum about a software for linux that resizes an existing partition for installing linux, Sorry but I don't remember the name of that software. It was regarding Ubuntu distribution installation.
You can also take the System recovery partition image on an external hdd & after partitioning your hard disk as you wish you can again transfer those files from external hard disk to your laptop again in which ever drive you wish or you can create a small drive only for system recovery!
I hope this helps you!

Re: HP Laptop: Vista Recovery Partition Necessary on HDD?

Recently, Microsoft has released a latest version named Windows Vista.
Compared with the other Operating Systems in Windows family, Vista
contains a new feature which allows users to resize partition without
any additional software. Previously, resizing partition is only
available by using additional resize partition software.

In consideration that most of the people still do not know how to
resize partition in vista. We would like to give you some directions as
follows:

1) Click on the Start menu

2) Right click on Computer and click on Manage

3) You may get a User Account Control dialog here; just click Continue

4) In the left pane, open up the Storage category and click on Disk
Management

5) Here, you will find your partitions on your disks. Right click on
the partition you'd like to modify and it turns out a box

Re: HP Laptop: Vista Recovery Partition Necessary on HDD?

Thank you everyone for your quick replies.

I followed rupak's advice and could split my C the way I wanted.

I still don't know if what I have in the partition for the system recovery must be kept on my HDD or if I can simply delete it once and for all since I have a DVD for that purpose. Anyone can shed some light on this, please?

The Windows Vista Recovery Partition can be deleted if you feel there is no use. It can also be done using your Recovery DVD. Till date, i've never used windows Recovery Disk, nor Recovery partition. You do whatever you want. After all its your computer! All the best!

Re: HP Laptop: Vista Recovery Partition Necessary on HDD?

Yeah, well, I guessed as much that since it's my computer I can do whatever I want with it, but I want to make sure I won't make a big mistake.

That being said, can the system recovery DVD do the job by itself? It doesn't need to see that all the files for the recovery are actually on a partition on the HDD?

Re: HP Laptop: Vista Recovery Partition Necessary on HDD?

I think Solomon is correct you can definately go ahead with your decision.
Since you said you have the DVD with you then I think you no longer need that recovery partition!
If you are not sure about the recovery partition then you can keep it as it is on your hdd I don't think it takes a lot of hard disk space it wont be more than 5-6 Gb of data IMO!
I hope this helps!
