Windows XP logs off immediately after logon

    Hi,
My laptop boots up as normal, but I get automatically logged off and the Windows XP Home select user log in page is displayed. I select myself and the screens displays the 'loading personal settings' page and then automatically logs out. This also occurs in Safe Mode. Could I have accidentally deleted a program that Windows needs to boot up? Has anyone had this problem before?

    Thanks for any help

Your system is infected with a trojan horse/virus. Only option is to format and install xp.

I think your pc is attacked by Malware. Enter the Recovery Console .Boot the system using the Windows XP CD-ROM. In the first screen when the Setup begins, read the instructions press "R" (in the first screen) enter the Recovery Console. Type-in the built-in Administrator password to enter the Console. You'll see the prompt reading C:\Windows (Or any other drive-letter where you've installed XP)

Type the following command and press Enter.

    • CD SYSTEM32
(If that does not work, try CHDIR SYSTEM32)

    • COPY USERINIT.EXE WSAUPDATER.EXE

    • Quit Recovery Console by typing EXIT and restart Windows.

    • You'll be able to login successfully

    • Now, change the USERINIT value in the registry

Try to connect your hard disk to any another PC and check for virus using best antivirus software. if no virus exists...... If you had changed your hardware configuration, it may be the cause. To resolve it change your hardware to back.

If problem still unsolved, use any boot disk and goto Drive letter(may be C)\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and restore to previous point. If it fails try repairing your OS by OS Cd. If all above fails, you need to reinstall your OS again.
