Can't open hdd drives (C: , D: ) with double click, error message

    Hello,
I formated my C: & installed fresh XP pro but now I still have the original problem with my D:\ & E:\ that I can't open them with mouse double click.
I can get in those drives from drop down OR Folder view but double click simply wont work.
I installed XP again because I thought it was a virus but I dont know if its really a virus or a bug?

I can see some hidden folders & files on both of these drives.

    Anyone for help?

go to command prompt and write this command
    d:\> attrib -r -s -h autorun.inf
    d:\> del autorun.inf
    e:\> attrib -r -s -h autorun.inf
    e:\> del autorun.inf

    OK

and so on for all affected drives.

Finally check the volume root of each drive for autorun.inf file.
Is that file present in any drive? If so, manually delete it.

    restart the pc

    1. You have to tell Windows to show hidden and protected system files first.
    2. Then you should search your computer for all instances of files with the name autorun (ANY extension) and delete them. DO NOT DOUBLE-CLICK on discs that have any such files because you will again be infected!
    3. Launch regedit
    a ) Find the key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/Current Version/Winlogon
and check the value of the parameter Userinit. This should read C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe, nothing more.
If Windows is installed on another disc, then, of course the disc will be indicated.
b ) Completely delete the following key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/MountPoints2.
This last step should be repeated for all user accounts on your computer. You should then restart your computer and that's it.

when you try to click on a drive, you can run this command from the run box or command prompt:

    regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

This should restore the normal behavior.

If you are getting a message that says "Windows cannot find 'PET32.exe'", then at some point you had a virus, or still have a virus. First, make sure that you run a virus scanner to get rid of the virus. Then run the regsvr32 command above, which should fix the problem.
