question IE 7 Favorites - unable to save

My new PC came with Vista preloaded and a 500GB drive partitioned with 8GB on C: and the remainder on D:. I created my user account and used a portable drive to move my docs from the old computer to the D: drive on the new. I then followed instructions found on the web to 'point' the default user settings (registry) to the new location on the d: drive. I manually moved my favorites over by exporting from IE6 to IE7 in the d: favorites folder. They show up in IE7 just fine and I can click on the existing favorites, but I am unable to save any new ones to the existing folder. I receive an unspecified error in IE7.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    -Ray

Re: IE 7 Favorites - unable to save

Vista is very good at protecting users from their own idiocy... so much so that it can be a chore for Power Users who mess with their settings all the time. For example, some people like to move the location of Internet Explorer's Favorites, but IE 7's Protected Mode will prevent you from being able to write to this new location. Whenever you try to save a web page to your Favorites, then Vista will generate an error message.

Again, we have to pull out our bag of Administrator's tricks to tell Vista that we know what we are doing. Here's the procedure on how to fix this:

    1. Close Internet Explorer.

    2. Click the Start button.

    3. Click All Programs.

    4. Go into Accessories.

    5. Right-click on Command Prompt.

    6. Select Run as administrator.

    7. When the UAC Prompt appears, click Continue.

    8. At the command prompt, go to the new location for your Favorites folder.

    9. Input icacls favorites /setintegritylevel (OI)(CI)low.

    10. Press Enter on the keyboard.

    11. Close the window.

You will now be able to write to your Favorites folder.
