vista sound comes & goes

I have a windows vista home premium laptop. For the last few days I don't have sound with games, IM, Skype, etc. but I do with all the Windows programs. If I turn off my computer & turn it back on, some times all sounds work & some times just the windows sounds work. Also I could be on IM ( or any other program or game ) with the sound working & it will go off. I have checked everything & all is said to be working.
Anyone have an answer for me?

Might be a sound driver conflict. Try reinstalling it and check whether it is still giving trouble or not?
