I have a SATA HDD formatted to NTFS. And my Windows XP installation resulted in the letter J: instead of C:. So do you have an idea why and how I can adjust it so that Windows XP is installed on "C" drive?

I have no solution for you, but it would not be so embarrassing to have J: instead of C:. All software should support it (no hard coding in C). So even if you do not want to waste time you can leave as well.
Have you tried using:
Control Panel-> Administrative Tools-> Computer Management-> Storage-> Disk Management (Local)
No, you can not change the drive letter of the volume of the system or boot, at least in xp pro!
I just had the same problem this afternoon, but it was letter H in my case! I reformatted the hard disk and reinstalled the OS. It helped me.
I think U cant change til newly format
