Problem installing Ubuntu, error 17

I am putting Ubuntu on an internal hard drive connected as a Slave. If I do so and start my PC, there is some error 17. So I inserted my other HDD as internal slave where there is all my data! However I can not boot windows, I can do it only with the HDD with Linux (I have the choice between XP and Ubuntu). My brother connected IDE HDD. I do not know where the problem lies. Please help.

It basically comes from MBR (Master Bit Record).

Master boot record is the 512-byte boot sector that is the first sector of a partitioned data storage device such as a hard disk.

This MBR is the sequence that allows to choose the operating system. This MBR sequence might have been changed when you have installed Ubuntu. If you start such hard disk, the MBR does not know what to do and so you get the error.

The MBR can be repaired with the cd of XP (but it kills the boot of Ubuntu) or the ubuntu cd.

The MBR (master boot record) is a routine boot which aims to instruct, to launch the operating system (Windows). But the GRUB Ubuntu took the MBR, so that you can not boot Windows.

You can try to repair the MBR with the Windows XP CD. Did you boot your PC from the Windows XP CD and you chose first to repair. You will need to go to DOS, and use these two commands:

fdisk / mbr or fixmbr.

This will recreate the normally routine MBR and you can re-boot Windows.
