Confused with win XP and Win 2000

I want to format pentium III with ATI 9200 PRO 128MBand it was not that to put an operating system, the computer is somewhat slow, but I wants one that is compatible with all kinds of programs. What do you recommend?

if it is slow put win 98, it is better than XP , win 98 will make it little faster.
