Did you downgrade your operating system form Vista to XP? This does seem to happen with doing a downgrade as the auto detect part of the driver does not seem to work under windows XP.

For this, I think reinstalling the latest drivers for sound devices will help

Generally, you need to turn off the speakers by a switch when you plug in a headphone.

A lot of people are facing similar kind of problem and therefore it seems to be a satic zap problem. A lot of people noted it happened shortly after plugging in speakers or a headset to their speaker jack on the laptop. I think this is zapping the onboard sound chip. So, if your dell is under warranty replace it and get some other model. Even uninstalling and reinstalling the sound drivers doesnt work.
