Drive letter change in windows 2003

    Hi All,

Currently my windows 2003 server is configured as below

    c:\12 GG
    d:\520 GB
    E:\130 GB
    F:\800 Gb

Due to disk space issue i want to move my data to F:\ drive, i know that using Robocopy i can copy the data to F:\ drive along with security permissions.
No applications are installed in the d:\ drive except my veritas netbackup.

I have copied my entire data from D:\ to F:\ drive and my plan is going to change the drive letter from D:\ to X:\ and then F:\ to D:\.

please let me know is my plan is right or anything that i need to do before changing the driver letter.

Yes, there is no harm in changing the drive letter, just for instance follow the steps here:

Changing drive letter is as simple as changing a file name, though there is some procedure involved. But if you got any programs or applications installed in that drive, then those may not function properly or may get disabled after changing the drive letter. Otherwise there is no harm in changing the drive letter.

As you said that you have Veritas NetBackup on your D: drive, I am not sure if changing the drive letter will affect its functioning or not. Please confirm this before changing the drive letter.

The procedure for changing the drive letter is as follows:-
    1. Start -> Run -> type diskmgmt.msc -> OK
The disk management console will open.

    2. Right click on the drive whose drive letter you want to change.

    3. Select Change Drive Letter and Paths...

    4. Click Change... button

    5. Beside the section Assign the following drive letter:, select the one that you want from the drop down menu

    6. Click OK

It will ask you for the confirmation along with some warning. If you are sure that there is no harm then click OK and the drive letter will be changed

Do you have any user tying into this server to access these drives, if so you are going to need to remap thier access if you change the drive letters. Server drive changes is a little different then just changing your XP drive letters.
