msn signing in problems after restore

Yesterday I did a complete reset of my systen which took me back to factory settings. I have Windows XP. I did a lot of updates etc and used msn as my main internet connection.
Now when I try to sign into msn it says
'MSN Messenger Service is not installed on this machine. It is a critical part of MSN Explorer and must be repaired before you can use MSN Explorer again. We'd like to repair it for you now.'
So I click to repair and it comes up with the message that is can't repair and that I should close all programs and restart computer. I have done all this but it still stays the same.

I recommend an uninstall of MSN followed by a complete install, either from CD or the web site. Unless something is really damaged locally, the install process will find all your local user accounts and information and everything will be restored to normal.

In addition to the suggestion on remove and reinstall, run a full scan with a malware detection program and antivirus to ensure that nothing has damaged Msn Explorer or MSn Messenger.
