Tried to reformat, now it doesn't work

I'm technologically retarded - have zero idea what's going on. Thanks for any help in advance.

My bf gave me his old computer (Dell XPS laptop), so we used Killdisk (to reformat?) ... spent a couple hours waiting for that, I put in the Windows XP Home disk, tried to boot from CD.
It went to the blue Windows Setup screen, seemed to start loading ("Setup is starting Windows"), but then the "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage ... " message appeared.

Then technical information with those "0x0000007E"

I do have adequate disk space, I'm not able to enter Safe Mode. If I need to give out more info for some help, let me know.

    Thanks

    Jordan

Why did you use killdisk to reformat the drives where else you can have used your Windows Cd instead to format the drive. Do this, go into your BIOS & select boot from cd first & put your windows cd in the cd drive, restart & install the Windows again by formatting the drive & folow the instructions.

Go to www.microsoft.com and type in 0x0000007E in the search
box in the upper right of the page, hit <Enter> or click on
the icon. You will be presented with about 56 links on this
error code. You can read through them to see if any might
    help you with your situation.

    Like I said, technologically retarded.
I appreciate your help, but even when I select 'boot from CD' it just takes me back to that screen where it tells me it's shutting itself down.

    Thanks again

I did just that, to no avail. I'll have someone take a look at it for me I suppose

    Thx again
