Ubuntu 9.04: Jaunty Jackalope

Ubuntu, the Linux distribution general public has a development cycle very regular. Every six months, Canonical offers a free new version to download. The latest official to date is Ubuntu 8.04 or Hardy Heron. Based on kernel 2.6.27, the next version of Ubuntu 8.10, Intrepid Ibex, will be released in October next. For this new opus, the graphics engine is based on the beta version of Gnome 2.24 and manager in graphic X.org 7.4. Also, Ubuntu 8.10 will carry the system operator Network Manager 0.7.

In an email sent to the developer community, Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Canonical Ltd., unveiled the future operating system: the version 9.04 will be named Jaunty Jackalope (jackalope cheerful). By inviting developers to meet the local Google for the next summit of the company between 8 and 12 December, Shuttleworth said that the draft Ubuntu 9.04 will begin in November.

For the record, the jackalope is a legendary animal of American folklore at the crossroads of a rabbit and an antelope which, as is the parrot, fun to mimic human voices repeating the songs of cowboys.

The outline of Jaunty Jackalope are already established. Shuttleworth wants to maximize the time it takes to boot the system. "The Jackalope is reputed to be so rapid that it is impossible to capture [...] see if we can accelerate the start-up or the resumption of Ubuntu system to prevent the remark even more." With version 9.04, Ubuntu will also in the new generation of Web services. Shuttelworth said: "Prague, we have already discussed the preliminary foundations for weblications [...] and we want to integrate these services in 9.04, discussions are more advanced in Mountain View."

The official release of Jaunty Jackalope is planned in April 2009.

I have the second info:
Ubuntu 9 will be too heavy for a netbook!

Linux is becoming increasingly heavy, while XP is stagnating (heavy) and strengthened steadily safe!

XP is no longer the priority of MS and do not move anymore, so it is normal that is stagnating.

the heaviness of Ubuntu, since it is in question, what do you mention?

I see how one cannot say that Linux Ubuntu is heavy ... ubuntu 8.04 runs very well on my dell 2Ghz 512 of ram, especially when you surf or when you listen to music, and even when we play also.

Given that eeepc generally has 1.6 GHz and 512 of ram, it's enough to run Linux, even if it is more "heavy" than before.

They’re going to put all of Ubuntu into a single bzr repo? I can’t imagine that’s very feasible. And I expect they will be changing their mind about that.

so ubuntu's flavor of Linux is like my second favorite ( maybe even tied for first) OS. But I've always wondered about open source companies like canonical: how do they make money? Granted they have the user base working with them to make the OS better but each release seems to get better and better. That's a lot of man hours and some of these people gotta be getting paid. Excuse my ignorance on this subject.
