| Windows Update borked - Error Code 80004002
After doing all Vista (Home Premium) and Windows updates earlier in the week, I suddenly couldn't boot. I tried using system restore to a date midweek and it didn't work, so I tried the date of the another update earlier in the week and that didn't work either. I got different error codes each time. I finally used the OS disk and ran chkdsk and that enabled me to boot normally after running it, BUT: 1. What happens to the updates that may have been partially undone? Will Windows notify me that I need to reinstall if an update is subsequently corrupted? 2. I just tried to check Windows Updates from Control Panel and get Error Code 80004002. I have not changed my settings for windows updates, though - I'm set to have Windows notify me and allow me to choose which and when to download and install. Why the error message now, what do I do, and how do I know if I have to reinstall any updates? This is my first post to this forum and I'm obviously confused. Thanks for any help. Leslie |

Hello Leslie! Welcome to Techarena community! I dont know if you are quite comfortable with fixing this error or not but you can try this OR simply ask any friend to help you out with the following steps to perform. According to me you need to re-register the windows Update related DLLs. Open an elevated command prompt, and type the following commands. Press ‘ENTER’ key after each command:

Hi Modifier, Those directions didn't work, but you put me on the right track. Here's how you do it in Vista: You copy/paste the following into notepad: REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL /S REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL /S REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL /S REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL /S REGSVR32 WUCLTUX.DLL /S REGSVR32 WUWEBV.DLL /S REGSVR32 QMGR.DLL /S REGSVR32 QMGRPRXY.DLL /S REGSVR32 JSCRIPT.DLL /S REGSVR32 MSXML3.DLL /S Save As (all files) register.bat on the desktop, and then right-click on it to run as administrator. Worked like a charm for me.
