SP1 cannot install error 80070002

While installing SP1 installation failed at 9% downloaded with error 80070002.

Looked up error and MS suggested stopping update service and deleting all files and folders from the datastore and download folders under windows\softwaredistribution and re start update service.

Did that tried to install SP1 again got to 25% downloaded and failed again with the same error 80070002.

Microsoft said if previous deleting of files failed, to stop update service again and this time rename/delete the entire softwaredistribution folder re start update service and try again.

Did that tried to install SP1 again. Update service rebuilt the softwaredistribution folder substructure, got to 20% downloaded and gave me the message "update not needed" !?!? I double checked to see what patch it was I didn't need, it was SP1.

So I returned to the desktop, got a message update ready for your computer, went to look and sure enough it was SP1. Tried to install it once more and again it failed with error 80070002. Any help would be appreciated.

Does it actually fail to download or fail to install? If it fails to install,
then you need to install it manually. I had the same problem when Vista tried
installing the update. I'm guessing it's framework 1.1 service pack 1 that
fails to install? If so, then you need to go to
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Install (assuming your main hard-drive is C
to install it manually. Hope this helps.

Hi all,

I found a solution to the Vista SP1 error code 80070002. I have tried all of the recommended steps and nothing worked. Today I found the one that works. Run this file: System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista (KB947821) [August 2008] from the following website: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/t...displayLang=en. After downloading and installing the above listed tool, I had no problems downloading and installing SP1 for Vista. I hope this information helps.
