login failure

I tried to log on to my computer (Dell inspiron 531)which runs on Windows Vista Home Premium. AfterI entering the password I got the following message.


"The user profile Service failed the log on. User profile could not be loaded.'


When clicked ok the password prompt re appeared with an option to create a reset password using a password reset disk. i did not create a password reset disk. The system ws purchased with Windows Vista already installed. I created the password myself.

Bottom line i cannot log on. I tried F8 which did not work. ploease advise
What caused this?
How is it to be fixed and prevented?
