    Linux Operating System

Linux is the name usually given to any Unix-like computer operating system. It derives much of its basic design from UNIX during the 1970s and 1980s. Linux uses a monolithic kernel, the Linux kernel, which handles process control, networking, and peripheral and file system access. Device drivers are integrated directly with the kernel. Linux distributor’s supporters lots of programming languages.

That was great information. I realized it today that Linux is actually derived from UNIX. What else do you know about Linux. I am very enthusiastic about Linux and wanted to learn it.

cool Is Linux Good? (yes and no)

I am using Linux for quite some time now and I prefer
it over any other other operating system. However, It's
strength is server applications and development, but
    even business applications are fine.

    Except:

    Hardware support for peripherals sucks.

Most vendors stick with their proprietary device
drivers making it very hard for linux developers to
come up with a linux driver that supports 100% of the
    device's functionality.

The problem starts with chip sets on the main board,
which can be responsible for setting up networking,
    sound, video, ...

Then it goes on with printers, scanners,

So far I was able to buy the right kind of hardware
after digging through the compatibility lists and linux
    forums (but it ain't fun!)

For example: Go for a Hewlett Packard printer, if you
    want to save some trouble.

However, finding a decent Webcam that works
    drives me really crazy.

There are gazillion different models out there (even
from the same vendor), and in todays marketing world
the published tech specs are more than insufficent.

With linux you need to know which chipset is used in
the camera in order to determine, if it has a chance
to work on your system or not. Unfortunatelt, you find
different chipsets among the same Model number! That
    makes it a gamble.

To top it, you most likely don't even find the exact
model number in your local store that was reported to
work fine in some forum posts. You just get the X678
instead of the X678C, and that one might not work.

All vendors are able to do is put on a WINDOWS
    certified logo. That's it.

I just tried my second webcam (at first Creative!, now
Philips) that I cannot get to work with Linux. But the
Philips one doesn't even work properly with WinXP. So
it might be a real hardware defect issue. Will see
    what support tells me.

I love to use Linux, I have learned to live with the
problems that come from Windows, but seriously people,
I am considering to get a Mac from Apple.

Whenever you decide to run Linux you should be a bit
tech-savvy and you should study compatibility lists.
You will thanks me for that.

    Hope that helps.

Indeed . That was one of the finest reviews I have read about Linux, that too about real experiences. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
