How much is the memory limit of windows xp

I had 2 gb ram installed on my computer. But now i added up 2gb more ram in it but instead of detecting 4 gb or ram Microsoft is detecting it only 2.75gb of ram, wierd? Why is this limited by windows xp. I know XP limits the RAM, why? I wonder where does the extra 1.25gb of ram goes or if it is being utilized caue i think that i made a complete waste in investing for it?

It is limited in all 32 bit Operating system. See here for more info.

It is the limitations of 32 bit os that the 1.25 gb of ram is always unrecognized. Are you able to see 4 gb ram recognized when the BIOS screen loads at boot? Run Memory test & check to see if the the memory sticks are installed properly or not. If you have integrated graphics then some of the memory is utilized for video memory as well. What are your specs btw?

All processes (e.g. application executables) running under 32 bit Windows gets virtual memory addresses (a Virtual Address Space) going from 0 to 4,294,967,295 (2*32-1 = 4 GB), no matter how much RAM is actually installed on the computer.
