| Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter KB916521 Will Not Instal Update) have announced a new critical update for Office 2003 entitled "Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB916521)." You can download it, but it will not install, either automatically or manually, and the Automatic Updates icon will not leave your System Tray. If you turn off Automatic Updates, it will be replaced by a Security Center warning in that tary saying "Automatic Updtaes is turned off. Click this balloon to fix this problem." There seems to be no way to solve this issue. |

Hello, I am running Windows XP Pro SP2. I also have the same problem with this latest update. I also had the same problem with the filter for April, which I never resolved that problem!!! As Groucho said I have downloaded it but will not install I have another problem with Windows Defender which is that it will never update!! Could this be the problem? Could they be linked in some way? I would like to do a survey please!! EVERYBODY PLEASE ANSWER!!! Maybe it will help MS!! Well we can hope!! How many people DO NOT have Defender and DON'T have probs with the filter? How many people HAVE Defender but DON'T have probs with the filter? How many people HAVE Defender AND HAVE probs with the filter? Thanks for your little time |

Hi Andrew, In the meantime I have received the following five-step solution from Microsoft. Step 5 solved my problem, but only after I completely uninstalled my Office 2003, eliminated all its entries in the Windows Registry, reinstalled it from scratch, and ran Office Update several times. Also, Step 5 does not mention uninstalling Office 2003 from the Add or Remove Programs folder. In my view, this where you should begin if the first four steps fail, which they did in my case. |

I've only tried the first 4 steps of the 5 step process from Microsoft - not yet wanting to reinstall Office to try to fix. Hoping someone comes up with an easier fix. Results of the first 4 steps for me: 1)Update cannot be applied 2)I already had MANUAL as start type in services.msc 3)After clicking on Install in step 5, I get error message during the repair "Installation ended prematurely because of error" 4)After starting the LISTOOL.exe, I get error 0x8007002 and it asks me to contact Microsoft. I hope some guru comes up with a fix other than to delete and reinstall Office to fix problem with the OUTLOOK Junk mail filter update. Hope the 2 additional errors noted above don't also indicate I need to reinstall OFFICE. |

Hello Vic, Your experience is almost identical to mine. In my view, every Office 2003 user now has this problem, and Microsoft is not doing anything about it. There is no solution short of completely uninstalling and reinstalling Office 2003. Here is what happened to me. In Step 1 (which I had tried on my own before receiving Microsoft's message) the following error message was displayed: "Update for Outlook 2003: Junk E-mail filter (KB916521). The update cannot be applied." In Step 2 the Office Source Engine Service had already been started and its startup type was already Manual. In Step 3 the following error message was displayed: "Microsoft Office 2003 Setup. Installation ended prematurely because of an error." This was followed by another error message: "Add or Remove Programs. Fatal error during installation." In Step 4 the following error message was displayed: "Microsoft Office 2003 Local Installation Source Tool. The Local Installation Source Tool has encountered an error: 0x80070002. Contact Microsoft Support for further assistance." In Step 5 I deleted all Microsoft Office entries from my registry, deleted my C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office folder, reinstalled the software from scratch, and installed all the updates. Finally, Symantec's Norton WinDoctor found 14 problems in the registry (which it fixed). It seems to me that before running Windows Install Clean Up one should try to uninstall Microsoft Office 2003 from the Add or Remove Programs folder. Not doing so creates other problems. For example, the MSOHEV.DLL file cannot be deleted. Kind regards and good luck. |

Hello Groucho, Thanks for your quick reply!! I would just like to ask one question first if I may and that is do I need the original CD for MS Office? I ask this as my computer came with everything pre-installed. I should have received the original CDs but didn't (as I paid).... That is another story and a legal battle which is still going on!!! If you'll follow the directions in the link in my previous post, I think you'll find your problem will be resolved easily and much more quickly than what MS is telling you................... You'll find this fix will take care of your April problem too. The problem is not with defender. It's a registry problem. |

NONE of the fixes stated here or anywhere WORK. And why should I have to try and sort or change registry keys or uninstall and re install. I haven't the time or the patience to fix the mistakes of others when I have paid good money for a product. MS fix the problem with an update immediately or face class action law suit. Can't even contact MS via web with description of errors. NOTHING WORKS NOW......Listen to everyone and their problems. Myself and many others like me are not educated enough to go changing things and fixing problems ourselves. This will only cause more problems. And why should we reinstall. NO THANKS. Fix it or I will be returning all your MS garbage for a full refund and looking elsewhere. |

In Peter Folders 5/7/2006 posting on the subject "updates refused to install", I followed Peters instructions for REGEDIT changes. That took 1 minute. When I started the first OFFICE program, I had to give the 25 digit Office Product Code to continue using and office product. I note, all the most recent "documents" were not remembered - I had to "open" them manually. When I then was ready to install the KB916521 Junk Email filter, IT INSTALLED w/o problem.
