Cannot install Office 2007 SP2 upgrade

I downloaded the 290 MB file to manually update Office 2007 to SP2.
However, when I run that huge file, it generates an error message saying
"The detection falied, this can be due to a corrupted installation
database."

I then tried to reinstall Office 2007 from the original installation
file (I bought it online and downloaded the installation file) but that
failed, too. That error message read only "Setup did not complete
successfully. We are sorry for the inconvenience. An error occured [sic]
during the installation, and setup was unable to complete. Please tell
Microsoft about the problem." I clicked "Send Error Report" and also
looked at the log file that was sent. The last few lines of the log file
read:

Error: Type: MsiOpenDatabase call failed.. MsiAPICallFailure ErrorCode:
110(0x6e).
Error: Type: MsiOpenDatabase call failed.. MsiAPICallFailure ErrorCode:
110(0x6e).
Error: Type: MsiOpenDatabase call failed.. MsiAPICallFailure ErrorCode:
110(0x6e).
Catalyst execution finished: 05/02/2009 12:07:31. Return code: 30050.
Exception caught: MsiAPICallFailure.
PERF: TickCount=32508828 Name=RunSetup Description=End function
====================================================

I am afraid to totally uninstall Office 2007, as I am afraid that I
won't be able to reinstall it once it is gone.

I also tried to do the update via Microsoft Update, and the update
appeared to install, but then when I check the versions of my Office
apps, they still say version SP1.

I have already run the Office 2007 Repair tool from within Word | Word
Options | Resources and that did not solve the problem.

How can I get SP2 installed?

Re: Cannot install Office 2007 SP2 upgrade

Did you try applying this update before installing Office 2007 SP2?

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...7-dbd3ebe3c5c5

If it still fails at this point, try installing the service pack this way in
order to get a log file created.

c:\downloads\office2007sp2-kb953195-fullfile-en-us.exe
/log:c:\downloads\OF2K7SP2Log.txt

The logging file may help you/Microsoft diagnose why the update will not
install.

Other than that, you workstation must have a minimum of Windows Installer
3.1. Vista SP1/SP2 and Windows 7 already contain the correct version of
Windows Installer. This check only needs to be done under Windows XP SP2
and older workstations. You can get the version number of the windows
installer by doing a start > run > msiexec /? > ok button. Version number
is right at the top. Latest version of Windows Installer is 4.5. If you
opt to upgrade your Windows XP workstation with the latest bits, then you
will want both of these:

Re: Cannot install Office 2007 SP2 upgrade

No - but I downloaded after reading your message and tried it. It failed
with the same error message as the SP2 upgrade package.

I downloaded and installed both of those patches and now have Version
4.5 of Windows Installer. I then ran the service pack with the /log:
command to create a log file.

How can I get someone to review the log file and figure out what's going on?

Re: Cannot install Office 2007 SP2 upgrade

Neo,

I have Windows XP (SP3), and Office Professional 2007 (SP1). I am having the
same problem as Mitch when I try to update Office with the SP2 download, I
get the same message "The detection failed, this can be due to a corrupted
installation database". I did all the steps you show below and get the same
failure.

What can I due to get SP2 to work?

Re: Cannot install Office 2007 SP2 upgrade

Usually Microsoft will do a free support incident for installation issues of
just released service packs. MS support loves this log file because it
helps them determine what is going on. If you don't want to try them yet,
you could try posting the log file here and I can take a look at it to see
if I can figure out what is going on.

About the only other suggestion I can find for 0x6e errors is to
uninstall/reinstall the product. If the product will not uninstall via
add/remove programs (or Vista's Programs and Features applet), Microsoft
does have http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218/en-us that describes a
manual uninstall process. To me, this article would be the last ditch
effort to make things right.

Neo:

I just tried to post the log file, but I couldn't -- Thunderbird
reported that the post is too large (the log file is over 500K).

download it

Re: Cannot install Office 2007 SP2 upgrade

This is going to sound odd, but can you create a new user id on your Windows
system and give it Administrator rights? If the answer to this is yes,
please logon with the new user account. Insert your Office 2007 media into
your CD/DVD drive. Download the 290+ Mbyte Office 2007 SP2 patch again and
try to apply it.

Reason I'm asking you to try this is that the log file just has error codes
that temp files/folders couldn't be created.

Re: Cannot install Office 2007 SP2 upgrade

I can do that, but I don't have Office media - I bought it online and I
only have the original downloaded installation file.

I'll try it, though, and report back.

Thanks so much for taking the time to help me figure this out.

Re: Cannot install Office 2007 SP2 upgrade

OK - I tried it. I created a brand new user account, logged in with that
account, downloaded the 290 MB update file and tried to run it. I got
the same error message I got when I tried to run the update file from my
normal user account.

Re: Cannot install Office 2007 SP2 upgrade

Thinking out loud... I wonder if you can burn/copy the contents of the
download to a CD/DVD and try the steps again. Just wondering if said
download was some sort of self extracting archive of the product and the
update wants to go back to that temporary location to get something but the
files just wouldn't be there.
