office 2007 encountered an error during setup

I am putting together a new computer and when I went to install office 2007
on the Vista 32bit the setup was interrupted by a screen freeze. When I went
to reinstall it came up with a message after I put in my Product Key
"Microsoft Office Small Business 2007 encountered an error during setup".

I tried following the posted article (ID 927153) on the 2007 Micosoft Office
suites site which stepped me through the process of deleting rgstrtn.lck
which apparently prevents one from reinstalling office, but the procedure I
followed did not delete this file. Anyone try this with any luck? When I
check the directory for the file it still shows up.

Hey, I have the exact same problem as you.

I have tried to delete the rgstrtn.lck file but everytime I type "attrib -h rgstrtn.lck"
I get the following message: Path not found.

I have also gone ahead and manually uninstalled as per microsofts instructions including deleting the appropriate files through regedit.

I still can't get past the first part of setup. It keeps saying an error occured during setup and there is no error code.

I guess I could've posted this as a new thread, just saw the date on this... sorry guys
Does anyone have any idea on what to do next?

Hey guys...had the same problem in Office Enterprise.
Tried with the cmd process but got the error Path not found
Need to delete the rgstrtn.lck file manually.
Here's the procedure
Press WinKey+R i.e. Run
type %allusersprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft Help
Locate the rgstrtn.lck
and delete the file manually...thats it guys...

Note: If you are upgrading from MS Office 2003 and want to keep the previous version you need to have the Office 2003 installed in your drive else you'll get Error: 1309...Njoy!

I tried the steps as suggested but couldn't find rgstrtn.lck as well..what I did was I deleted the entire Microsoft Help folder and it worked like a charm.

You may want to use the commands below when deleting the Microsoft Help folder.
- first open command prompt.
- type the following: cd "%allusersprofile%\Application Data" then hit enter
- type the command: rd /s "microsoft help" then hit enter
- try reinstalling MS Office 2007.

Hi, I have the same problem, and tried to delete the Microsoft Help folder, but when I did this it told me ''access denied'' for each field I was trying to delete. Any ideas?

To run the command you need to start the command prompt as Administrator. To tun the command prompt as Administrator you need to go to Start> Programs> Accessories> Command Prompt. Now right click on the Command Prompt and select "Run As" Option from there and enter the Administrator name and password to start command prompt in administrative mode. After that work with the above given step that will help you to delete Microsoft help Folder.

When I type in the above it gets me to a prompt that says "Microsoft help, are you sure <Y/N>?

if I type only Y it then goes back to the previous prompt. If I type <y> it just repeats the are you sure prompt, the same happens if I type "y"... any further help, I'm having the same problem as the others on this page.

are you deleting the entire Microsoft Help folder?? or you are trying to uninstall office 2007??

I would like to delete the help folder as I have been unable to get office 2007 to install as well. Thank you.
