"Program too big to fit in memory" error when installing Office 2003 under XP Pro VM

This post was originally placed in microsoft.public.virtualpc newsgroup on
JAN 16th, 12:04am.
Posting on this newsgroup as it may be an issue with OFFICE 2003 setup.exe
specifically (eg. DOS session requirements).

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

I setup XP Pro SP2 Vm under Vista x64 host and everything appears to be
working great.

I then tried to install Office 2003 from retail CD under XPP VM and receive
DOS window on clicking SETUP.exe stating "Program too big to fit into
memory". XP VM has 784MB RAM allocated... have not changed default DOS
settings.

If I run the Office 2003 CD/SETUP.EXE on the Vista host it starts up and
continues with the installation process. If I take the CD to another
native XPP system it starts the installation process. I also tried
installing the CD under another computer's (HP laptop versus ASUS PC) Vista
Host/XPPsp2 VM... and saw the same problem... XP VM memory configured with
default 128MB (as compared to 784MB or 1GB with first attempts on other
setup).

I also tried starting a DOS session under XP VM and manually calling the
SETUP.exe program... same error, just the DOS window didn't close on me. I
also tried changing DOS session's settings... For example, I set to run as
ADMINISTRATOR.. same error as before. I checked the
%SYSTEM%\System32\CMD.exe ... date/timestamp same as other OS files...
388,608KB FEB 28/2006 7:00a [ 5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158) ].

I couldn't change Compatibility Options on CMD.EXE (since part of XP) so
used the Compatibility Wizard... tried Windows 2000, 800x640 resolution, no
visual effects, etc... did not work... same error. In fact, all OS
selections (NT, 98/ME, 95) would not work.

Only thing I can think of is that Office 2003 setup.exe needs some
UNconventional memory under XP VM that isn't there... but how to enable?
Or, perhaps need to ask this question on Office 2003 forum... ?
( ... and here it is! ... )

Any thoughts as to how to diagnose and correct?
Thanks in advance... Grant
