Fatal error during installation

My system was running with Office 2003 since years ,but as Office 2007 beta is out, I thought to give it a try and downloaded Beta. While installing the same on my system, I get “Fatal error during installation”. I thought my downloaded file is corrupt, hence I downloaded it again and again and again. Today was the fourth download and still I get the same error. Don’t know what could be the cause of this problem. Can anyone please help me with this ?

Are you trying to install it from the downloaded package itself or you burned it on CD ? Anyways, I just want to extract or copy the cd to a folder and change one of the files as shown below:

• Search for a file named Setup.ini the Office package.
• Right click the same and open with Wordpad or Notepad.
• Search for a term “CDCACHE=auto” and change it to “CDCACHE=0’
• Save the file and close.
• Now double click the setup again from the root of this directory.

Now the installation should go fine. For your information, why we made the changes is we told the system that you will not have cache on your HD anymore. Try installation and see if it works.

This problem seems very common with the users trying to install Office 2007 Beta. Alrite, If the file you downloaded is Office.exe then you need to extract the seup using the following command in RUN:

C:\TMP\Office.exe /c /t:c:\tmp\office2003

TMP is where I have downloaded the file;
c:\tmp\office2003 is where I am extracting the installation files.

Thanks a lot for your suggestion Taidje, but unfortunately editing the Setup.ini file dint helped too. One more guy suggested me a fix on other forum saying to remove the "_1033" or "_0001" from the extracted files extension and then try to launch "STD11" file. I did the same but that too doesn’t work.

One new thing I came through while doing all these is, no matter I remove extensions but when I launch "STD11N" file, atleast it takes me until the stage where we need to enter the product key. But as as soon as I enter the keys, it gives me another error saying "Microsoft Office Setup cannot continue because the installation source has been corrupted."

Well guys, I was having the same problem since last week and finally I managed to fix the same yesterday. Even I was getting two different errors, i.e, "Couldn't find a local cache drive." and "Failed to get download cache path." After lots of research and workaround, I finally did the following that fixed the issues:

Copied entire CD content to a folder on my desktop.
Opened Setup.ini with notepad and changed CDCACHE=auto to CDCACHE=2
Even uncommented the line "LOCALCACHEDRIVE=C:\"

I guess that setting LOCALCACHEDRIVE to C is the one that actually fixed the problem. After doing this I simply launch the setup from the root of my new folder and it went smoothly.
