Application error OSE00000.exe when upgrading Office 2003 to 2007

We have few systems running with Windows XP connected to each other and were running with Office 2003. Two days ago I tried upgrading the same to Office 2007 Enterprises via Group Policy. I made a config.xml that will uninstall Office 2003 and install Office 2007 Enterprises. When I started the setup it removed Office 2003 successfully but while installing Office 2007, it stuck at about 50% with error saying

“OSE00000.exe - Application Error”

Can anyone help with this ?

Even I’m stuck with very similar situation. As my research so far I think when office 2003 is removed via group policy before office 2007 is installed, the setup drops that ose00000.exe in the windows\temp directory. Later while installing office 2007, it uses that ose00000.exe which is from office 2003. When I tried to remove the same I found that it is locked while removing office 2003. So I think if we can remove the same, the error can be solved but we don’t get time to remove it because it gives very short time after removing office 2007 and starting office 2007 installation.

I think the error can be solved by simply renaming or deleting C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Source Engine\ose.exe before starting the installation.

Also I would like to know did you tried creating a custom action script and running that after a successful uninstallation of Office 2003? I don't know which package development technique you use but we use AdminStudio here and you can embed custom actions into an msi or mst and then execute them at given times or events.
