Office 2003 standard upgrade on NEW Windows 7 w/ works installed

OK - I give up - can I buy a vowel ? I bought 2 really nice new computers -
running Windows 7 64 bit - they are HP's and have Works 9 pre-installed. I
purchased the Office Standard 2003 upgrade for my previous computer which
installed just fine - 2003 upgrade says Works is a qualified product for the
upgrade. When trying to install it on my new computer it sys it can't find a
Office 97, 2000, XP. I have uninstalled the trial version of Office 2007 and
the 2007 compatibility pack - but I just can't seem to get it to go past this
check and install. HELP, I really don't want to have to buy Outlook 2007 (I
will go to OpenOffice instead of Office 2007). Any suggestions ?

There is a patch on the MSoft website to fix this. The problem is that
Office is not recognizing Works as a qualified base. The issue is not coming
from Win 7.

I did a Google search and found the solution. I don't have the search string
or the solution anymore, but I had this problem not too long ago. You will
find the answer, Grasshopper.

The issue you are having is that Works 9 is a later version than Office 2003
and it can not be used as a qualifier for the upgrade version of Office
2003. The site that Jeff mentioned
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/943290 is for Office 2007 only.

One error in the web site is that they specify that XP suites are qualifiers
but fail to mention that XP Student and Teacher does not qualify for the
upgrade of Office 2003.

Sorry but unless you can "legally" find one of the upgrade qualifiers you
are out of luck in using Office 2003 on the new computers.

On my computer which has both Works 8.5 and Office 2003 installed Works 8.5
was issued in 2005 and Office 2003 was issued in 2003. There is no way that
the install program of Office 2003 would be aware of an even newer installed
program to use as a qualifier. Office 2003 can not even use another version
of Office 2003 as a qualifier, it needs an older program.

Microsoft fixed some of the upgrade issues in Office 2007 by allowing
another version of 2007 as a qualifier and all previous versions of Office
suites from 2000 to present except it specifically excludes Office Student
and Teacher XP.

That IS the upgrade information for Office 2007 not Office 2003. The web
site that I gave in my first post
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/315995) is the only thing I
can find for the Office 2003 qualifiers on the internet. While it is
apparently in error that it does not list XP Student and Teacher as an
excluded upgrade qualifier it isn't a qualifier for 2007 so I would also
assume it isn't for a 2003 upgrade.

Works 9 is a much later product than Office 2003 and is NOT a qualifying
product either.

So my original comments still hold. Unless you can obtain a qualifying
program you can't use the Office 2003 upgrade CD.

At the time the link I posted included the Office Standard 2003 Upgrade
pricing and a description of the prereqs - it happens to be the same as for
the Standard 2007 upgrade. I am NOT upgrading from Home and STudent - both
2003 and 2007 upgrades indicate that Works 6-10 are qualifying base products.
Installing on a new Windows 7 works differently than on a Windows XP system
- 7 just doesn't allow for the recognition of Works.
